Did you ever get your vibration issue figured out on the 4.2? I recently bought a '00 with 30k miles. I replaced the original SP9000s but the vibration persists (although not as severe). I had the dealer check wheel bearings and tie rod ends. They told me all looked well (don't know if they really checked). It sounds very similar to what you described in your posts. Did you get the issue resolved before getting rid of the car?

Yes...it's all in the wheels and tires...well, it was for me...

The problem is that these cars are EXTREMELY sensitive to even the slightest of imbalance or irregular tire wear. It is amazing. I don't know what wheels you have, but the 4.2 5-spoke forged wheels seem to be particularly difficult to balance...and keep balanced...

It is strange, but the vibration was completely cured in my 4.2 about 10,000 miles before I sold it...but now the S6 has a similar vibration. I will need to get these wheels rebalanced soon...it's driving me nuts. I really hope the new Audis...the current A4 and upcoming A6 don't have this issue. It is very freaking annoying and is unlike any vehicle I've ever driven. But, the good stuff is also unlike all others so it sorta balances out

I have the same issue still with a '02 3.0Q

BTW, I have the same issue. The dealer replaced the front rotors twice and the rear once. Then they move the front tires to the back and did a wheel alignment and balance. It Still happens!!! Ahhhh!!. All this started after 10,000 miles. Now I am upto 15K and it still does this. I have another visit to the dealer this week and will let you know.

Apparently "road force balancing" with the newest Hunter machine is "best"...

but others here know more about this...

5 Spoke Forged Rims Experience...

I recently had my tires R&B at the dealer and they indicated that BOTH front rims were bent (they are now on the back). The car is 2 years old, has only 13k miles, and is babied. I have NO recollection of hitting any potholes or other road imperfections. Fortunately, I don't have any lingering effects (i.e., vibrations, etc.) and as a result, I'm not going to fix them. Of course, that could change at the next R&B when the bent rims are moved back to the front.

They told you they are bent? These are forged wheels. Do they appear bent?

You could have a bad belt in the tire that will cause these symptoms. If you were to jack the car, spin the wheel and not see any out of roundness, then it's probably not bent.

I'll chalk this one up to the dealer expertise in all areas.....they are usually a joke.
