Default 2002 Audi A6Q Brakes problem CLARIFICATION......

First of all let me thank ALL of you for sharing information and experience with me, I really appreciate it!

Most of you were right - front brakes should work harder, wear faster and create more dust. In my car(A6Q 3.0) with All original, identical material and made in France brake pads (I leased the car brand new) the rear wheels have a lot more dust and the brake pads were worn out metal to metal at 18K miles which is VERY disappointing!!! Still have about 1/2 inch on the fronts. Other thing is that after replacing the rear brakes at the service center (car still in warranty), it was VERY hard to stop, like my front pads were replaced, not rears. After break in period, the car stops as it did before.

I am currently talking to Audi and will certainly update all of you as I progress with this issue.

Thank you all!
Alex

Sounds perhaps they might not have found the root cause, but just replaced the worn rear parts.

Default Holy cow. It was very hard to stop after replacing rear pads?

That is very odd. Maybe the problem is at the front - if the fronts are not working hard enough, then of course the rears will wear out faster. Now why would the fronts not be working? Glazed pads, maybe. Faulty rotors, I suppose is possible.

If you have a safe place to do it, try rebedding the pads. Make 4 repeated hard stops from at least 50 mph down to under 5 mph with no rest between. You want to be close to kicking on the ABS each time. Don't set your ebrake until things cool off after this. This should help if the pads are glazed. But if you have faulty brakes, it could lead to a wreck, so be careful where you try it.

Default Yes, that is right, it was VERY hard stopping the car after they replaced the rear.....

....pads and re-surfaced the rotors. Well, I've had this problem ever since I got the car a few months ago. It is particulary scary when trying to stop the car while driving with about 100mph. It all start shaking and you can hear even a grinding noise. The rear brakes smell really bad and turn blue, while the fronts look nice and are about three times cooler than the rears.

I am convinced that there is something wrong with this car. The fact that I went the other day and drove another brand new A6 3.0 and it felt the same is VERY discouraging. I will go back and try 2.7T and 4.2 because I can't believe they are all like this. It is possible that something is wrong with the 3.0s ??? I don't know, but will investigate and will not stop till I don't have all the answers.

Yes, that was my suspicion. Something wrong with the fronts.

Default This is NOT a generic 3.0 problem - I have never heard of it before.

Even though there may have been 1 other who said he had the same problem. But he may have been talkinng about dust, not performance.

BTW your latest description is by far the most useful info you have provided - it clearly points to a problem with the fronts underperforming. So get the mechanic to look hard at them.

Default Dave's right. The problem is with the fronts. The rears are largely irrelevant to stopping the car.

And the shaking you describe sounds like uneven pad deposition on the front rotors - but that would not explain the heat differential that you refer to.

Where do you live? If it is near another AWer, you should have them ride with you to experience first-hand what you are describing. Many people on here could easily figure out what is wrong.

As an aside, I recently put new pads and resurfaced the rotors on all four corners of my wife's Explorer. When I went to test drive it / bed the pads, I was certain that there was a catastrophic failure of the braking system given the amount of fade in even a single high-speed stop. It turns out that the brakes were working fine, and that - spoiled by my Stoptechs - I no longer had any idea how the rest of the world was stopping their cars. Now that I know, I am more scared by other drivers than ever before.

Default You should go to Stoney's drive on Sunday. A ton of A6 guys should be there.

It is hard to imagine a better time/place to get this figured out.
