Default 99 A6 Avant - chip/VAG question

First - great site - lots of great info. I saw a lot of good advice prior to my purchase of a 99 Avant in February.

Second - What option do I have for a best bang for the buck performance upgrade, I've seen several.

1-The GIAC engine chip that give about 10hp and a "quicker throttle response"
-My take on this is that - I've got a wagon, not a 2.7T. It's a heavy car and 10hp probably won't be much of a difference, at least by itself.

2-The GIAC tip chip - I've seen several people comment that the more precise and quicker shifting makes the car come alive and it feels like it has more horsepower.
-I figure that I'll probably start with this and then get a chip for the engine in the future. Any reason to do it the opposite way?

3-Recode my tip - obviously the cheapest, but what does it really get me?

Thanks in advance for your help.
Eric

Default My .02...

Forget the performance mods for this model. I run the tip chip and if I didn't have to run it because of the Xchip (I have 2.7T)I probably would not purchase it. I suggest you try and find another 2.8 owner with Tip and go for a ride in in it before you buy one.

Default Not much by way of upgrades. Just sit back and enjoy the 12 sec 0-60 times. If you want to . . .

drop some dough, look into a supercharger. I think they go about $3 - $5K. I think there are a few 2.8s on the forum who have them.

Nice ride. Good luck.

Default 9.6 0-60 Thank you very much. (more about supes)

The superchargers would put you at 295 hp 260 ft/lbs torque according to PES, the kit was at 4995, might have been on sale for 3995

Default This is pretty good advice.

I mean the part about getting a ride in a tip-chipped 2.8. Might also try for a ride in an ecu-chipped 2.8 - I know there are a few around.

Forget about tip recoding - it doesn't work in a 99. Unless there's been a quiet breakthrough since I tried it.

For a couple hundred bucks you could yank the overweight and overrestricted stock mufflers and throw on Magnaflows. It really will add a few hp, and certainly sounds faster!

If improved handling interests you, throw on the PSK rear sway bar for $125 and some good performance tires. You'll be surprised at how much better it will corner. Of course, even a stock Miata will still run away from you on the straights, but what the heck - it's a great excuse for being the slowest car on the track. (Not that I ever was the slowest in my 2.8, but that's another story. I didn't even have Magaflows on it.)

Whatever you do, enjoy the car - it's a dandy!

Default Sounds like not too many options

I appreciate all the tips.

Basically it sounds like I got the car I bought - which is an A6 wagon - throw the bikes and skis on top and pile in (which I've done many times).

I guess my only other option would be to get an Allroad, but I just like the regular A6 (of course S6) a lot more.

Thanks,
Eric

9.6? 12? Feels more like 18 sometimes.

Default Re: Is suppercharging worth it vs trading it for a 2.7T ?

In my personal opinion, financially it does not make sense to supercharge the 2.8 vs dumping it and buy the 2.7T variances: s4, a6, allroad.
PES supercharge cost about 4K-5K, add on installation cost.
Dumping the 2.8 to get 2.7T may cost anywhere from 9K - 15K depending on the condition of both cars.
But you can only bring your supercharged 2.8 an PES authorized shop to have it things fixed
With the 2.7T, you can find more choices. Yes the 2.7T cost a bit more but it does not limit you from the upgrade and maintenane stand point.

Good option, but need the room. Ski in winter and bike in summer. Love the wagon.
