Default $1200. for water pump/timing belt ???

WOW! Is $1200(parts and labor) too much for a water pump, timing belt, roller, tensioner and serpentine belt...just wondering if I got ripped by Prestige Audi here in Denver???
1999 A-6 Quattro 2.8.

I don't think so. Six months ago I had my 98.5 A4 2.8 in an independent shop in NC and had the same work done plus a 60k mile service. I paid nearly $2200 and felt that it was a fair price. I know think that I was overcharged.

Default Nope, that's the going price from the dealer. BB got ripped..(m)

To replace everything that should have been replaced costs about $500-$600 in dealer parts alone. When you figure about 6+ hours labor that's the price you get (depending on local labor rates).

Getting only the timing belt changed is shorting yourself. The only thing that was missed by "fart" was the thermostat. He'll wish that was changed at about 100-110k miles.

Newy also got ripped pretty bad, especially if that was an independant shop.

$600-$800 is more realistic, from an indie shop.

I also inquired about the 60K preventative maintenance at McDonald Automotive in Denver. I was quoted $1400 for the job (replace timing belt, water pump, and spark plugs).

As a new Audi owner, I am quickly learning how expensive this car can be to maintain.

Default I think I have seen a sign advertising belt changes my local NJ Audi diealer for $420.00

They compared their price to about 4-5 other independent shops in the immediate area. The dealer's pricing for the belt change fell somewhere in the middle of the pack.

Default That's only for the belt which is far short of everything that should be changed with this service.

Comparing apples to oranges is mis-leading for those that don't realize other items should be changed at the same time as the t-belt. The following items are highly recommended:

- T-belt
- Waterpump
- T-belt Roller
- T-belt Tensioner
- Thermostat
- Serp Belt
- Serp Belt Tensioner

Also, the cam seals and crank seal should be changed if they are leaking.

Not changing everything above (minus the serp belt items) is not a "good deal" at any price, IMHO.

Default Re: $1200. for water pump/timing belt ???

The dealer in NorCal quoted $1385 for replacement of water pump on my 2000 A6Q 2.8. I reviewed the procedure in my Bentley manual and I can see why.

The first step is: place the front lock carrier in the service position, which is Audi speak for remove pretty much the entire front end of the car. Figure about two hours labor for this and then two more to put it back on. This is not the case for the C4 platform, so those who are suggesting a lower price may be talking about an earlier model.
