Default Need advice on used A6 4.2 - 2001 or 2002?

Hi everyone, I have owned a 98 A4 1.8TQMS(APR chipped) for 5 years am interested in getting into a larger car. The new A8L is too much money for me right now. I would like to get into a slightly older A6 4.2 (relatively low miles) and would like your opinion on the model years and must have options. Also, where should I start my search? Thanks for your help and advice

The 2002 has of course any improvements made over the 2001.. it came loaded with options that have been removed for 2003.. including the only year they put the tiptronic shift buttons on the steering wheel.. It is probably the better choice of the two and comes with a longer warranty as well. I'd imagine that your local Audi dealer(s) would be a good place to start.. some great deals being offered up.. you might still find a new 2002 cheap..Look for the Sports Package ( suspension, wheels and seats) and as many other packages as you can get on one..I'm sure the others will be along here any moment to expand on this.. Good Luck.. !

Default Look for a 2002 - many improvements over the '01

Less noise, 6 CD's in dash, etc. With more warranty carry-over it should be a wash or better in terms of cost. Unless you are into total plush, look for the Sport package, premium. Make sure it has Xenon - hard not to get it. I had the sun screens and the cold weather package, both of which were greatly appreciated. Also, its a fairly large car and I got good use from the back-up radar if you can find it. Unfortunately, in a 2002 you won't find Nemo Blue, which is, of course, the fastest color.

Default The '02 has all the benefits of the ROW S6 sedan minus 15 lbs-ft & 40 HP that can be found

without tweaking ECU's and just bolting on some high flow straight through performance mufflers. Maybe not 40 HP, but you get the torque back.

Default Just curious....if the 2002 was better equipped...why...

did you opt for a 2003? I know that Bev.Hills had leftover 2002 4.2's. Did you just want to get a certain combo of options that you couldn't find on the lot or were there other differences. I agree that 2002 had some cool options (tip on wheel) that were dropped in 2003. thanks.

Default Well, it was a combination of things..

They didnt have the packages I wanted and the salesman didnt have the info I wanted either. He sorta didnt know about the other changes I found out about after I ordered it.. But I wasnt gonna spend that kinda money for the color combo/packages they had at that time.

Default Well, there's the 40 HP and 15 lbs-ft, but don't forget the gearing and suspension. MAJOR points,

those are!!!!

I agree that the 4.2 is close, and can be modded to improve it quite a bit over stock (particularly with regards to handling), but the S6 steering feel, much improved suspension, shorter gearing, higher rpm limits etc. add up to more - IMO, a lot more - than what adding a muffler can fix.

Defense of the S6 resting now... I'd definitely look for '02 4.2's as the improvements over the '01's were noteable, for sure.
