Default Brake Pads - which do you like best?

For all-around driving. Did you notice any improvement over stock pads besides less dust? I have to make a decision soon. Thanks!

Default A few comments about aftermarket brake pads

I've fooled around with European cars (Volvo, VW, Audi, Lancia, Mercedes) for over 30 years and done disc brakes on all of them. I have used PBR(Repco), Ferodo and Mintex, the Mintex Red Box is my favorite. Aftermarket brake pads generally produce less dust because they are made of a harder compound. This harder compound also generates some different braking behaviors. The harder pad is less efficient at brake when cold fresh out of the driveway in the morning, they take a few blocks driving & stops to warm up. Another think I've noted is that OEM pads have a more linear braking response while many performance oriented pads can be almost logarithmic in response with increased brake pedal pressure producing more of a grab. You get used to it. Also - harder pads will wear out your rotors sooner.

Default That link is from 2001...

The Mintex were revised and are sold by several retailers.

Default So! :-)

I have the most recent Red Box and they fit my HP-2 brakes. They dust a moderate amount although it doesn't stick to the wheels as bad as the OE pads. The post is still useful as a comparison and I've even gone to the trouble of posting his latest quest for the ultimate pad.

A more recent post

Default It makes no damn difference to you!! Sorry.

There are no aftermarket pads for the '02. At least there were none as of January, and I haven't heard of anyone finding them since.

You see, in MY02 they dropped the HP2 brakes in favor of a single pad per side, and there are no alternatives available unless you want to pay Proterfield a mint for a custom fabricated pad set.

If you want better brake pads, you need new calipers, too.

Default Re: Well Sir, you are wrong, it does make a difference to me!

I undertand about the brake caliper change for MY02. I do not undertand your statement of...a single pad per side...?
What exactly are you alluding to here, only one brake pad per side of the caliper/rotor?

Default Re: I agree mostly, although some of the "new" compunds

have reduce some of the behaviors of the old tech. aftermarket brake pads. Now if they would only produce them for 2002 A6.
