defroster not working

Well, just when I needed it most last night in sleet and freezing rain, my defroster seems not to work on my 1996 A6 Wagon. Fan speed goes to max but all air comes out the front of the dash - melted the frames on my glasses! No air out of the defroster vent. What should I investigate first?
