Default Ugh, the dreaded "burr on slider" tranny issue....(long)

{FYI 2001 2.7T 6-speed}
Got off the expressway to find I couldn't get into 1st or 2nd gear. Was able to force it enough to get home - a search revealed the "burr on slider" issue, possibly as the result of a missed shift. I don't even remember missing a shift! Have been able to correct ~%70 of the problem by working in & out of 1st/2nd.
Thanks very much to Don Istook for reporting this issue when it occurred on his race cars. BTW, Don described the correct repair for this problem as simply deburring the slider with a die grinder - once the tranny is out & disassembled of course.
Also, only 31k miles, and the warranty expired on December 2nd. Better get off my @ss and install the Bentley manual!

Default go out and find a place where you can drive at 5 to 10 mph and work between 1st and 2nd briskly

if you can get it to grind doing that when going into 2nd it can clean off the burr. just hold clutch in while coasting and shift quickly. removed burrs twice that way.

Only a 3 year warranty on an '01? Worth a shot taking it to the dealer - only 5 days...c'mon.

Default I have this issue...ticks me off (more)

Second gear has on and off almost locked. I just have to be patient and work the burr out. However, I don't think a class action should be ruled out. I continue to hear the same issue reported time and time again.

Phoenix will sell a rebuilt for $3k, Audi only sells new for $7500. I have NEVER had a standard transmission have syncro or other problems. THIS IS TOTAL FUBAR!!

Anyway, just venting with similar concerns to Chaddy...

Default Nope. Admittedly though, I can be a bit rough on the gear changes. Still agree w/ Kris above...

...I'd like to hear a technical explanation as to why the parts in question were designed this way. Probably some engineer's idea for solving a separate problem, and this is the consequence. Stupid engineers (I'm an engineer).

Default Looking at the parts, that doesn't sound like a bad idea....
