Default ABT Motorsport 2.7T tuning offer. Advice needed.

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/83978/abt-as6.jpg"></center><p>
Hi there,

Once again, I could use your advices. Could you tell what you think of the following tuning offer? The mod consist in upgrading the power of an A6 2.7T from 250ps to 360ps. The engine torque would increase from 310 Nm to 510 Nm. It's only available for an A6 2.7T with the manual 6 spd gearbox (like mine). The company offering it is the german company ABT Motorsport. As far as reputation is concerned, they just rule the world of Audi engine tuning in Germany and they are also the winners of the german DTM championship (German Super Touring Car championship).

The upgrade kit I'm looking at consist in installing the following components:
- ABT turbos
- ABT high perf exhaust (double twin exhaust pipes system - see pic)
- a modified fuel injection system
- a modified air intake system
- a modified engine management system (ABT chip)

The price, all taxes and setup included, is 13.920 EUR (about 11.600 USD).

Considering that I'm really not a DIYer, does that offer look decent to you too?

Thanks a lot for your answers.

Enricos

Default Just a point of clarification pls. 310 Nm translates to about 229 lbs of torque. I belive the 2.7L -

is spec'd @ 268lbs/250hp stock and the ZF Tiptronic is rated @ 310 lbs torque? Don't know what the manual is rated for.

Default Its about twice as expensive as what I consider to be expensive here.

My buddies used to weld exhausts and slap turbo's on anything they could imagine. It wasn't all that hard...

but you ARE paying for ABT name...AND if you can afford it...its worth it. I'm guessing not many other 2.7Ts out there will have what you have. Just make sure you show off your investment with ample ABT tuning products and logos =)

In the used car market you could add that to the price of your 2.7T and end up with a better model to start out with. Just a thought.

Good luck.

Default Now that you mention it. My 6sp is rated 350Nm/250Hp, that is 258lbs/250Hp. The ABT tuning is...

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/83978/abt-as6_small.jpg"></center><p>The ABT tuning is a conversion from:
350Nm =&gt; 258lbs 250Hp (OEM specs for 6 spd)
510Nm =&gt; 376lbs 360Hp

I didn't realise it wasn't 310Nm/229lbs (1Nm = 0.7376 lbs).

Thanks for that remark fl2.7T but I'm a bit surprised by the 268lbs you're refering to? It might be worth checking that one because in Europe all the 250Hp 2.7T are rated 258lbs (Tip and 6spd). There used to be a front wheel drive with 230Hp and less torque but it was not sold a much as the 250Hp.

Regards,

Enricos<ul><li><a href="http://www.aa1car.com/carleyware/convert.htm">Here is a nice little car related units converter</a></li></ul>

Default you can get the same performance paying much less.

i think it costs so much because you get their name/logo on a few parts.

Default You also get TUV approved parts (performance/durability) and possibly a warranty.

Since Abt has so much experience and resources, you pay extra - like Dinan and BMW parts. Sure, you can always do it for less. Just keep in mind the guy sounds like he might be in Europe, and the options for both cheap and good tuning are not as widely available from a reputable tuner. Lack of regulation and a constant cuthroat market of fly by night tuners and gulliable buyers mean prices here are more depressed than most markets. The DIY and acceptable level of risk, can vary by market as well as owner. As Enricos says, he's not the mechanical type, so it might be offer more peace of mind to go with a well established brand to whom he can turn to when he has questions.

It just depends on your priorities.

Default Well, if you decide to spend the $$$ on this upgrade...

a least skip the "AS6" badging...at first glance, I thought it said "***"

Default I'll pay extra for a big name, but only if it really means something (performance, reliability, ...

.... or warranty). I would not expect the ABT set up to be any more effective or reliable than putting together bits from reliable shops (GIAC, Supersprint, etc.).

If the ABT name meant that you got a warranty, it might be worth the extra $$$$.
