'00 2.8 tranny - all dash selector lights on?

Default '00 2.8 tranny - all dash selector lights on?

So my wife calls in a panic, at 45 mph cruising down the road the car goes "klunk" with a big noise and shudder ... all the dash selector lights come on. She can not tell what gear is selected unless she actually looks at the selector.

I tell her to drive directly to the dealer, but she goes home first, puts in park to get the mail, then in reverse, all the lights remain lit during this time, and finally shuts it off. When she starts up 10 min. later to take to dealer, all the lights are fine, dealer finds "no problem."

Is this a sign of impending doom? Any clues appreciated.

I haven't VAG-COM'd it yet, I assume if it threw any codes, they probably cleared them.

Default This happened to me. It was intermittent as well.

Default Trans most likely lost communication with TCM and went into

limp home. This is most often from water having gotten into the electrical connector at the trans. Been raining recently?, or driven through a good puddle?

Default There was some kind of fault code

Could be a bunch of different things.....but if you've never had your tranny fluid and filter changed....do it now!

Default Dont expect to find water in the connector. I have never

seen one soaked with water. All it takes is a little moisture to frag the signal. The usual cure is to disconnect the connector, clean with electrical contact cleaner, reconnect and then seal the rubber cover/boot with some black silicon.
