Changing the oil/filter for first time soon...
Is the ECS tuning oil service kit a smart buy? It includes Mahle or Mann brand filter, drain plug and 7 Quarts of Pentosin OEM synthetic fluid (5w-40) for $49.

I have access to full lifts...is there any "gotchas" to keep in mind when doing this?

Thats a bargain. Pentosynth is sold is litres which is a little
more than a quart so you'll have some leftover if they sell you 7 litres. Thats a new drain plug? Or is that a drain plug seal ring? In any case its a bargain and a cake job. First time should take you 30 minutes. BTW the Pentosynth is what we use unless somebody asks specifically for something else.

The 2.7t engine is the easiest oil change I've ever seen for the DIY guy/gal.
The hardest part is taking off the belly pan/cover. You'll need a 19 mm wrench (IIRC) for the drainplug and the oil filter is easy to get at. I suggest a light film of clean oil on the new filter's gasket and be sure you don't overtighten the drain plug putting it back in - you want to seal it tight (and crush the washer if you have that style - N/A if you have the type of plug with the permanently affixed washer) but remember that the pan is aluminum alloy and is soft compared to the drain plug. A gorilla can strip the threads if he tries...
