Default battery life

Any estimates on how long the average original battery lasts on A6 4.2?

Four years is the longest I've seen. 17 years of experience with VW/Audi batteries. Make sure you keep the water level where it belongs....dealer never checks it, although it is part of the service. I've seen it dry on two occasions when I get too lazy to check. I'd check every six months.

Default Batteries that can be filled are ancient relics. Todays battery is a non service

item. You cant check the water without cracking the case open.

Both my '99s had fillable factory batteries. They lasted until Fall 2003, or around 5 years.

In October I shamed the dealer into replacing the battery at their expense....battery was bone dry 3 days after 50,000 mile tune up. Second time I'd been stuck, it's happened to my father also.

As of October 2004, Audi is still using batteries you have to add water to in the A4 and A6 models. Granted, my 1968 Buick is truly non service, but that is not what the dealers are using.

Default Sigh..... Yes, you can pry the bar/cap off the top of the battery

to check the water level but you have to work at it to do so. The days of the little screw caps for each cell are gone. You can put water in them if your so inclined but from Audi service schedule they are a non service item. I have not seen a tech check battery water levels in years. Granted you can squeeze some extra life out of them by doing so, but its just not routinely done anymore.

Default Mine just quit

Five years in my case. Of course the timing was perfect, all loade up to go to my mom's for Thanksgiving dinner. AAA showed up in a record 10 minutes. My local Kragen just happened to still be open, had my battery, so I changed it at my mom's b 4 dinner.

Default Sigh, no need to pry, the factory battery still has screw caps!

You can get some extra time on them by keeping the levels up, but after 4 years, just bite the bullet and replace it. It's not worth getting stuck. The dealer didn't argue on the replacement, they knew it is part of the service.
