Default Fog radar / Adaptive cruise control mod ?

<center><img src="http://pictureposter.audiworld.com/83978/toecutters.jpg"></center><p>
Two days ago I had to drive about 500 miles for a back and forth trip from Luxembourg to Amsterdam. There was a lot of very dense fog and it was freezing at the same time. No need to say that although I have quattro and winter tires on my 2.7T this was a real pain. Especially the night drive on my way back to Luxembourg.

In the new A6 I saw it has the adaptive cruise control which could very nice for situation like this. Just cruise and the built-in radar will just read the road for you and brake whenever needed. I guess it could be very useful to cruise through fog too?

Does anybody know if it's possible to add such a radar driven system on an A6? Would it be possible to take that system from the new A6 and fit it on an older model? I don't know if that sounds like science fiction to you but it would also be very nice if this could be combined with some type of head up display like the one that seems to be available on some BMWs.

Any thoughts on this?

Regards,

Enricos

Default that is so wrong.

The adaptive cruise control can't react fast enough to brake/stop for a stopped car that you come up on in the fog.
I believe the radar cruise control has a somewhat limited range to enable constant-gap cruise control control...
Figure out the emergency stopping distance for your car from 60mph (ok, 100kph)...somewhere around 130 ft? How about 70mph?---240ft? The point is many things can be picked up by the radar and you might not want (much less Audi) the brakes to slam on.

The other problem is the moron behind you who is following your tail lights. There are notorious fog roads here in the US (I64 in Charlottesville, VA, some mountain roads in PA) where there are multiple pileups despite embedded road lights, many warning signs, etc.
Still, nice try.

Default Not autopilot... ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL

The only think that the adaptive cruise is much good for is for when you are cruising along, and some jack *** decides that he wants to pass you then move into your lane and slow down OR you approach another car in your lane that is traveling slower then you and you want to remain a safe distance behind him without turning your cruise off.
I have used adaptive cruise in traffic to see how it responds and it will bring the car down to about 20 MPH (where it then kicks off) but it will by no means guide you through fog, bring your car to a stop, make you drinks, or anything besides reduce throttle input and apply brakes.

Default I can take care of the drinks if the adaptive cruise control can take care of

reducing the throttle and applying the brakes. Bringing the car to 20 mph is already quite nice. At that speed you can surely see if you have to bring the car to a full stop or not...

Default Agree 100%

Only solution is to slow down and hope you don't get rear ended.

I hate driving in fog more than anything.

If only it would do that at Panic brake speeds though... It applies the brakes, but not fast enough to be "accident avoidance".

Stick to driving, let the passengers make the drinks.
