Default Clunk going over bumps

Hi all -- new to the board. Just bought a 2000 A6 2.8 FWD (not quattro,, next time...) with 98k on it for $8,800. Its excellent cond with the exception of some missing/dead pixels and a small clunk when I go over large bumps or potholes. The sound is coming from the front driver's side. Sounds like from right under the dead pedal area.

I've owned more Honda Accords than I care to remember and it doesn't sound like the CV joints, like it did on the old Accords. It makes no clicking sounds when I turn, etc.

Any thoughts?

Thanks all, glad to be a part of the board!

Most likely one of the control arms.

Default Have the control arms checked, tie rod ends and sway bar end links.

On my 98 A6Q w/ 83k miles that I recently picked up the dealer replaced the tie rod ends suspecting that they would fix the problem (ends were worn) but it didn't.

Their next suggestion was the sway bar end links but since that isn't covered under recall I did it myself (quite easy and cheap at $60 for the parts).

What I found was that simply inspecting the end links isn't good enough. Even if the boots around the link bolts are still good the inside could be worn and you wouldn't know it. The stock ones on mine looked fine and as I moved them around it was easy to move but there was no apparent play that I thought would cause a clunk. I replaced them anyhow since the parts were paid for and the clunk was gone.

You can get all 8 and tie rods with new bolts from ECS for $500 and change.

hmm, thats not too bad. This stuff adds up fast, though. I'm going to do all four brakes, since it feels like they are warped. 500 here, 500 there... Plus the Vagcom OBDTool for the check engine light....

Do you have the ECS website? www.ecs.com is some computer hardware site.

Default Check the driveline mounts(ala- trans, motor, diff)....

If you remove the belly pan under the car, look to the right and left under the motor mounts for a blackish-purple fluid. If you see it, then its time for new.
Like the others have mentioned, Audis like front end components, so its worth a look.
