'99 A6 2.8 ECT Question

I replaced my Aux Fan and Fan Control module today. The old one locked up and burned out the Fan Control module.

The fan now works (quietly thankfully) when I dial my climate control down to 'lo'. When I turned the climate control off, the fan stopped.

My question : Outside of this scenario, should the Aux Fan be turned on at a certain coolant temperature? I read the tech forum article and it appears the ECT should turn on the fan at low speed at a certain temp.

Aux fan is always on when the AC is on. Otherwise aux fan is controlled by coolant temp.
