Default Tires wearing on the insides...have a few questions...

As many of you know I bought an '01 CPO 4.2 two months ago. The tread on all four tires is prematurely worn on the inside of the tread while the rest of the tread has at least 5/32. The dealer is kind enough to replace them for me and will perform a complete allignment as well. I checked the control arms and they look fine. What else could cause this if not allignment, control arms or tire pressure? I want to make sure I have all bases covered.

Thanks

Default Dunno, but if all 4 did it, I dont' see how it could be the alignment...

I think it's a trait.. my car positively ate the inside edges of my last set of tires..

Certainly not the only cause but probably can minimize whatever bad allignment may cause...

Default Are you running stock suspension? Regardless, you have Camber issues...(more)

Camber:
Camber is the tilting of the wheels from the vertical when viewed from the front of the vehicle. When the wheels tilt outward at the top, the camber is positive (+). When the wheel tilts inward at the top, the camber is negative (-). The amount of tilt is measured in degrees from the vertical. Camber settings influence the directional control and the tire wear.

Too much positive camber will result in premature wear on the outside of the tire and cause excessive wear on the suspension parts.

Too much negative camber will result in premature wear on the inside of the tire and cause excessive wear on the suspension parts.

Unequal side-to-side camber of 1° or more will cause the vehicle to pull or lead to the side with the most positive camber.

Makes sense so how do I adjust camber?

Default My car is bone stock. Has been aligned twice, by a guy that knows what he's doing.

If it wasn't for the fact that you can't adjust camber, only equalize it side to side, I'd say you were on to something. Since you can't adjust camber, it must mean the negative camber is excessive from the factory, eh?

Default You don't really.. The only thing you can do is equalize it side to side...

by loosening and sliding the entire subframe side to side a little..

Default There are other causes of inner wear than Camber, Toe issues also cause edge wear and it is possible

even likely, that the front had a toe problem and then the tires were rotated before the toe issue was fixed. Probably didn't look like such a big deal when the tires had more tread everywhere and someone may have figured that rotating was good enough. Excess toe out causes inner wear with excess toe in causing the opposite. That actually happens quite a bit. If that were the case, a simple alignment, which always includes toe would fix it. There's just too many variables to solve here with too little information but the real answer to the question lies in the numbers on the alignment sheet when the job was done. If you have that, than you know if the issue was fixed.

Very good points. I didn't think about a tire rotation, that makes sense. Thanks for the input.
