Default Dumb questions of the year, but...

OK, so I'm taking delivery of a ming-blue '00 2.7T tomorrow. I've been reading you guys' posts for a few weeks now, anticipating what I'd like to do to her. I'm going to start with some tint (because I live in DC and need to deter theft) and then move on to my suspension -- I'd appreciate any suggestions you have on where to start. Hopefully this will be the first post of many (and I hope to learn a lot more about my car and mods from you guys).

Now for the dumb noob questions:

1. My girlfriend owns a Passat and claims that the standard Audi/VW car key almost completely deters theft. I.e., it's impossible to hot-wire the car. Is this true? If not, can someone recommend a good anti-theft system?

2. It may be cheesy, but I really like the "horn" thing on the rear portion of the roof of newer Audis (and BWMs, some Infinitis, etc.) I believe it's an antenna casing, but I'm not sure. What's the proper name for this thing? Has anyone added it as a mod to a C5 A6? What do you guys think about this?

OK, thanks for bearing with me. See you around!

Default wouldn't put a $1 bet on #1....

first off-good luck with the car. I love my '00 2.7T and wish you as much luck as I have had for the last yr and a half. No troubles at all, only minor repairs and a lot of good looks from the public and questions of "how could you afford a car like that??"

Now, on to your ?'s- The key isn't "the key" to the car being stolen. The factory alarm is pretty weak compared to any aftermartket alarm. Overall my personal preferance is to installing a hidden kill-switch that cuts the power to the ignition. Thieves can possibly get into the car but not get it to start. Better to lose small items than the whole car.

#2- I've seen it called the "shark-fin", but couldn't really help you a lot on that one since it's not something I've ever been interested in since would involve a hole in the roof of the car if using for satellite radio.. if just for looks then I am sure you could tape or glue one on...

love the color, by the way! You will enjoy it for sure! Tint really helped mine out-got 30% Llumar over a year ago- lost the AM on the radio but otherwise has helped both in privacy and keeping cool in the summer. You didn't state if you are getting a tip or 6 spd though...

Default Dr. Pooley's correct, but some additional info.

1. Your girlfriend must have a newer Passat. Starting in MY'01 for the A6, the cars came with Immobilizer III. This is a pretty effective theft deterrent, and yes, the key must be matched to the ECU. The newer keys contain computer chips. Your MY'00, unfortunately, does not have this system.

The good news is that cars without Immo are easier candidates for ECU swaps/chip tuning, key replacement and instrument cluster swaps. The pixels in the centre display are prone to partial or full failure. For Immo cars, a trip to the dealer is all but unavoidable in the above situations because they have to hook the car up to their factory diag systems to obtain a secret code.

2. Yes, the antenna is commonly called the shark fin. It's a real antenna and there is a hole in the roof for the wiring. You can find dummy fins on eBay and the like. Buy, paint and glue it on.

Welcome and good luck.

Default Tint is one of the best mods IMO. As far as suspension I'm partcial to H&R coilovers. 1) Nothing

is totally safe from theft. Your gf is wrong; but, you tell her that! =) Actually the items they add probably helps with low end thevies and joy ridding kids.

2) Meh!

3) Good luck with your car and your GF especially if you tell her she's doesn't know what she's talking about!
