Dumb questions of the year, but...
Now for the dumb noob questions:
1. My girlfriend owns a Passat and claims that the standard Audi/VW car key almost completely deters theft. I.e., it's impossible to hot-wire the car. Is this true? If not, can someone recommend a good anti-theft system?
2. It may be cheesy, but I really like the "horn" thing on the rear portion of the roof of newer Audis (and BWMs, some Infinitis, etc.) I believe it's an antenna casing, but I'm not sure. What's the proper name for this thing? Has anyone added it as a mod to a C5 A6? What do you guys think about this?
OK, thanks for bearing with me. See you around!
Now, on to your ?'s- The key isn't "the key" to the car being stolen. The factory alarm is pretty weak compared to any aftermartket alarm. Overall my personal preferance is to installing a hidden kill-switch that cuts the power to the ignition. Thieves can possibly get into the car but not get it to start. Better to lose small items than the whole car.
#2- I've seen it called the "shark-fin", but couldn't really help you a lot on that one since it's not something I've ever been interested in since would involve a hole in the roof of the car if using for satellite radio.. if just for looks then I am sure you could tape or glue one on...
love the color, by the way! You will enjoy it for sure! Tint really helped mine out-got 30% Llumar over a year ago- lost the AM on the radio but otherwise has helped both in privacy and keeping cool in the summer. You didn't state if you are getting a tip or 6 spd though...
The good news is that cars without Immo are easier candidates for ECU swaps/chip tuning, key replacement and instrument cluster swaps. The pixels in the centre display are prone to partial or full failure. For Immo cars, a trip to the dealer is all but unavoidable in the above situations because they have to hook the car up to their factory diag systems to obtain a secret code.
2. Yes, the antenna is commonly called the shark fin. It's a real antenna and there is a hole in the roof for the wiring. You can find dummy fins on eBay and the like. Buy, paint and glue it on.
Welcome and good luck.
2) Meh!
3) Good luck with your car and your GF especially if you tell her she's doesn't know what she's talking about!
