Default Rear Brakes

I asked a question about the battery in my friends wife's car yesterday now I'm following up on their rear brake issue. Their A6 has about 64k miles and the rear brakes were just done about 16k miles ago (probably just pads not the rotor). Now they need to be done again. Are Audi OEM pads really that soft that they don't even last 20k miles. Is there a proportioning valve that may need adjustment? Granted she's mostly city driving but this seems way too low mileage wise. What are all of you running for pads/rotors and what kind of mileage do you get.

Default Rear brakes may see unexpected wear due to the EDL and EBD.

Extra bumpy roads, slippery roads, high speed corners, etc, will all cause the brakes to be used more as the ABS sensors work in reverse to detect wheel spin and slow the spinning wheel via the brakes. That's EDL.

The car has a mechanical center diff, but the diffs at each end are open, and use the braking system much like a clutch type limited slip. The only difference is that it's easier to replace brake pads than it is diff clutches ;-)

EBD (electronic brake force distribution) automatically maximizes the braking load at each wheel at any time the brakes are used. It's a 4 channel system - as is the ABS system. So basically it's trying to avoid engaging ABS until all other braking grip options are exhausted.

If the car is carrying heavy loads, you have different tires front to rear, different brake pads front to rear, they can all contribute to the EBD and/or EDL working overtime.

Default My 03 went through a set of rears at 22K.....

mainly city driving. I think fronts went around ~10K but that was when dealers would replace rotors/pads under warranty for pulsation under braking.

Default Very nice...great explanation. I just replaced my rears after 45k.

Must have right sized tires and not overdriving the EDL/ESP.

Default Re: Rear Brakes

I complained about the wear of the rear pads also. The wheels are always much blacker than the front. Dealer calls it normal but compared to all the other 4 wheel disc cars I've owned, it's totally the opposite. I have a 2004 3.0 CVT.

Default Are the pads themselves wearing faster, or are

the wheels just getting more dirty than normal?
