Continued about the symphony upgrade...
Without the functionality of CANbus, you may as well go aftermarket anyway. You're going to lose your instrument cluster radio display and your steering wheel controls either way, so why not just get an aftermarket unit that will work right by itself.
Plus, with D-NAVI the nav disks are CD instead of DVD which are split into different areas of the country, and there is no audio CD player in the headunit, so you have to add a changer or phatbox to listen to anything besides AM/FM.
To convert your dash to double DIN means alot of OEM dash parts at a significant cost. There is no way (at this point in time) that I would spend the money and effort to convert over to D-NAVI.

Installing Nav+ is not trivial. The only one I'd consider for an older car is C-Navi -- wouldn't mess with D. And the faceplate needs to match.
Then he'd need either a CD changer or Phatbox. Trivial installation, but added cost.

Bose should still work with aftermarket, as the key components are the low impedence amps and matching speakers. It might not sound perfect, or as intended, but many aren't all that thrilled with Bose anyway. All the OEM HUs do for Bose is adjust internal equalization to match the Bose design. There are no wiring changes.
