Default 4.2 Transmission fluid and filter maint.

Any btdt input will be appreciated. Stoneys list seems to be mostly 2.7 oriented.

What are the options/pros/cons for taking care of the 4.2 tranny? tia

Default well I had a few drops of tranny fluid on the garage floor so I brought the car in to get the tranny

fluid changed out....at 38K.......left the car and then got a call from my service tech who advised me that the gasket was leaking and that they were going to replace it under AoA.....all I had to pay for was the filter and strainer.....(and the $50.00 deductible)

I am a big believer in preventative maintance...so I wanted to get the tranny fluid flushed.......at the dealer so that if there was any further problems at least they know it was done...and done correctly...8^)

Default I had mine done @ 54k...

Basically due to the information on tranny failures in both the A6 and A8 forums due to plugged filters from dirty "lifetime" ATF. I used an OE ZF filter kit I bought from a distributor for ~$65, and the Pentosin G052162A2 ATF ($9/liter x 8). I had my indie mechanic do the change when they were replacing the rear prop shaft seal that was leaking, so the labor was minimal. Seems like good insurance versus a $3000+ rebuilt tranny.

Default There is a link somewhere (Audizine, maybe) that shows a 4.2 tranny fluid change. The only real

difference is the shape of the tranny pan and the filter part number. Both are ZF suto trannys. STFA under my name and tranny and you should find a link to the ZF website that will have written instructions for all the ZF trannys. Sorry, but I don't keep the links handy. Keep in mind you must have the entire car on jackstands and level - to properly fill the tranny you must be able to have the car running while it's in gear (and obviously the wheels can't be touching the ground) and level. Otherwise, you can't fill it properly and you will do damage with underfilled tranny!

The link for the 4.2 is on the AW forums, but takes you to another site.

Default Dude - the link for the 4.2 tranny filter/fluid change is on Stoney's links - It's the one that

begins with "audipages" under the transmission link. [its for an A8, but that's the same tranny as an A6 with the 4.2.]
