Default What's a good winter setup for 18"s?

Winter is just around the corner for Chicago and Ive already started thinking about a winter setup. Currently I am running 255/30/19s with summer tires. I was going to be lazy and just leave them during the snow, but I having second thoughts now. My backups are 17" bbs wheels with only 225s on them. But I still want a decent "look" during the winter months, so I think I will buy some 18" wheels with all season/winter tires. Can anyone recommend their setups? Sizes and tire brands? Im thinking of 255/40/18s with Michelin Pilot Sports.

Default Don't even think about using summer tires through a Chicago winter. Best bet, since you have summer

tires already, is to get a set of winter tires. My Dunlop M3s have been great winter tires. ORder soon, they get backordered quickly.

Put them in your closet, and run some 16s with snow tires.

Default Since when are Michelin Pilot Sports considered a snow tire?

Since you have a summer set up and you are getting a separate set of wheels for winter...put REAL snow tires on them.

Personally, I would not get 18s for the winter. Just use your 17s with snows.

Default Agree with everything Dave said. 255 wide tires are hard to drive in winter.

I have 235/17 Nokian WR for winter, and even with the quattro, I sometimes (depends on how much snow on the ground) feel it's easier to get going on the 205/16 Artic Alpins on my FWD Passat.

Default If u are intent on getting 18's, then consider Tire Rack's pkg with AT Italia 5's and 225's. As

Slimmn says, 255's are hard to drive in the winter due plow effect.
