Default I've had it...

I am going on 3 weeks of my car being at the dealer for engine problems. Today, they replaced the ECM and the tech called me and told me that the car was finally fixed and running within "spec". I had my friend drive over to take me out to pick it up when I got a call from the tech. The car won't even start now. He has no idea what is causing the problems. Unfortunately, I do not foresee my family or me ever owning another Audi if the people who make these cars cannot even figure out what is wrong with them. I do not think I will be holding on to this one for much longer either.

Default Really sorry for you...my 98 A6...

has had it's problems, but all were what I consider wear & tear items. I have 153,000 miles on the clock and it rus as well as it did the day I drove it off the dealer's lot! (especially since I got new engine mounts on Monday! Lucky...I guess?

Default I don't blame you for being pi$$ed - 3 weeks is a long wait. But

the dealers don't build them, you know. And often they have the least experienced techs. Find yourself a decent indy shop and get better service for less cost.

Default The best and only certified mechanic at the dealer was working on it and Audi Engineering

has been involved several times, on a few occasions making personal visits out to the car. If they can't solve the problem I have little faith in an indy seeing as it has already been to one and they gave up on it. Also, the ECM came from an Audi tuner shop, 2Bennet.

I've had it too! Just returned home in a rental car because while I was away on what was supposed to be a mini-vacation my '01 A6 Q crapped out. Seems that the transmission locked into safety mode in 3rd gear and stayed there. Took it to the dealer where they diagnosed a new ECM which was not working so they could then figure out what's wrong with the transmission. Cost to get to the diagnosis stage: $1400. Then they'll let me know what needs to be done to fix the transmission. This is a well maintained A6, purchased new by me and now has only 45,000 miles on it. It's now about 8 months out of warranty. Will I buy another Audi? Very doubtful. My car is now at the dealer's about 200 miles from home where I will have to return to pick it up when the work is finished. I am totally bummed out!

Default A charge of $1400 for test/diagnostic time is very reasonable.

Thats only if that charge includes a recommendation of a specific repair, that will guarantee a long lasting resolution to the problem. Anything less is totally unacceptable and non-binding. If you refuse the diagnosed repair than you are obliged to pay for the diagnostic time. If they spend a boat load of time testing and still dont know what the problem is, you dont owe them anything. In this business, you only get paid when you fix it. You seriously need to look for help elsewhere.

Default If it were me I'd be on the phone with Audi Corporate.

Why this is not suggested or though of is beyond me. Dealers don't think out of the box. There are countless stories like this where there is a major failure after the warranty and AoA pays for 100% or 75 or 50, but its up to the owner to make the call and fight for what they want.

The dealer is charging you for over 11 hours of diadnosis? This does not make sense... perahps the new ECM whichis a 5-700.00 item + the time.. But the engine ECM is EPA covered to 70,000 miles. hmmmm
