Gas Tank problem/question

I have a 00 4.2 and I went to fill up this morning knowning that I would need 15-16 gal (I had driven sufficient milage to know I needed this much and the gas gauge also reflected this). The pump at the Shell station seemed to be pumping fairly slow (numbers were ticking up slowly). After about 5 gal the pump stopped as if my tank was full. I tried to start the pump again but it continued to stop after a second of pumping. When I got in my car to go somewhere else to fill the rest of the tank my fuel gauge showed a full tank.

I'm perplexed. Is the fuel gauge a mechanical gauge? I thought the automatic cut off at the pump was mechanical so I'm left with two conclusions. Either the gas station's pump was not working correctly and I did pump 15 gal for the price of 5 (unlikely right) or my fuel gauge is doing something funky. Any help would be much appreciated.

There was a recall for the fuel level sender...

Thanks for the information.

I purchased it from a dealer, would they be liable to replace it even as it is out of warranty?

Warranties and recalls two different things

A recall comes from Audi Corporate and IIRC has no time limit; it's good forever. So you should have the dealer run your VIN and see if the recall was done. While you're at it, have them check your car for ALL recalls, TSBs, unannounced recalls, etc.
