Gas Prices

I paid $3.31/gallon of 91 0ctane today! Is there a knock sensor like there is in my '91 100 that will allow me to run lower octane (87) w/o damaging the engine of my 2004 3.0L cvt C5/

Yes, you can run mid-grade gas under most conditions with no harm. Keep in mind though that

if you have a heavy foot at all or run the car under high load, an AW member found that their car actually used more fuel.

You can, but tou're pinching pennies in the wrong place. Less Starbucks, less smoking, less beer,..

less dining out, will all save you much more.

If you are not chipped then you can get away with less oct. but

The car will not run well under strong load and this will give less timing and less power.

Also remember low oct gas burns faster and with less force. This can mean you will use more fuel to obtain the amount of needed power to accelerate the car.

I have been warned about mid-octane before, though

Mid-octane is purchased MUCH less frequently at any gas station. Most people either buy super or regular. So, the mid-grade sits in the tank longer on average and is less 'fresh' since it is empied less often by the customers.
Also, mid-octane is apparently a mix of super and regular in the first place. It's not its own gas, they just mix the other two so you are never 100% sure of the mix and if the gas station is a little sleazy and trying to squeeze a few extra pennies out of the mix.

This may all be paranoid BS. I am simply repeating what I heard from other car forums. (Fora? is it Greek?)
