No the manual says that 87 is min. but 91 is optimum.

Default from my experience with the VW/Audi non-turbo V6's

I would run the lowest octane fuel I could get away with (engine ping then move up a grade). These are cold running engines that frequently carbon up and create no start situations. And don't be afraid to give these engine weekly Italian Tuneups if you do not already put on lots of highway miles. if it says minimum 87, I would run 87 unless you get knocks and pings.

Default Bad advice IMO, Rocky! The ECU will adapt the spark timing to any fuel IF:

the knock sensors are functional. But you will never hear the knock before detonation has destroyed the engine if you have your foot into it at sea level.
Living at 4700' and driving to 10K, 87 Oct is totally adequate, but I'm very soft footed at sea level. Stock 2.7T, chipped 200Q-20V.

Default 93. Knock sensor will help ECU adapt. Better power and mileage on better fuel.

STFA. This has been discussed a million times.

The heating value, calorie content of all (ethanol free) gasoline is the same.
