Default My Father is thinking about getting a '00 A6 4.2L sedan. I have a few questions...

STFA and didnt find answers to my questions.

Does the A6 change from yr. to yr? If so, what are the changes. Is one year better then the other? (2000-2002)
Is the 4.2 right for him, or should he get the 3.0? (56 years old. He's selling his '98 or '99 Acura RL to get an Audi)
I have owned a couple A4's and understand the maintance involved with those (controll arms, tire rods, water pump and t.b. replaced at or before 85,000 for the V6 engine) What things should we look out for in an A6?

Thanks,

Jason

Default A few things to consider...

First, which engine? 4.2 is a great engine with the A6, but it is thirsty. Has he driven the different engines yet? Does he wat 300hp under the hood, or is that too much?

If he decides on the 4.2, which is a great car, there is not too much difference between 2000 and 2002, other than some cosmetic changes, and a few features that were added to the car.

Here are a few things I could think of off the top of my head other than color choices. Maybe other can add to this list:

-2002 has "Sport" mode vs 2002 with "4-3-2" selection on the auto gear shift;
-2002 had exposed exhaust tips vs. 2000 where the tips are hidden under the rear valence;
-2002 had amber turn signals in the back vs. 2000 with all-red tail lights;
-2002 has the tiptronic buttons on the steering wheel vs. 2000 with the tip shift lever only;
-2002 has the SymphonyII head unit with a built-in 6-disc CD changer vs. 2000 with the SymphonyI single disc, but changer can be mounted in the trunk;
-2002 has bixenon lights vs. 2000 with xenon low beams only (optional)...

BTW 2000 and 2001 were essentailly the same.

Happy shopping!!!

Default The debate goes on and on about 2.7T vs 4.2. It comes down to which one he likes better

If he's into gobs of low end torque and likes V8 engines the 4.2 is a honey. If he likes the wider fender flares the 4.2 is the only way. If he's into mods and wants to build a beast, then the 2.7T provides a better pallette. If he likes the 4.2 and it's in good shape, let him buy it. Hope this helps.

Default Having owned both the 2.7T and the 4.2, I like BOTH cars...

the 2.7T was really quick off the line, felt mroe agile. The 4.2 is just raw muscle, and those wide fenders....

In the end, I think any A6 is a great car, just depends on the driver's needs and desires.

Default I went from an 03 Acura RL to an 00 A6 4.2 and could NOT be happier..but

it's a much much different car than the Acura.

Frankly I don't think the mileage is THAT bad. But after riding with BD this weekend I can understand how his mileage is so awful. He is just ADDICTED to the new exhaust sound.

I bought ours a year ago and it only had about 42k on it. Look for a low mileage 00 or 01. They are out there.

Feel free to email me with any more questions.

Default 3.0 sucks just as much if not more than the 4.2....

from my experience, and if you use the gas (the 3.0 is a bit slow from launch, but quickly gathers steam) you will get around 12-14mpg in town. Winter's gas formulation is even worse.

I would go w/ a 4.2.

Default 4.2 v 2.7T v 2.8 v 3.0 v 3.2

Check the model guide for details but here is a summary:

1999 -> 2.8 only
2000 -> 4.2, 2.7T, 2.8
2001 -> 4.2, 2.7T, 2.8
2002 -> 4.2, 2.7T, 3.0
2003 -> 4.2, 2.7T, 3.0
2004 -> 4.2, 2.7T, 3.0
2005 -> 4.2, 3.2

The 4.2 has most all the nice options standard or were ordered with them. Same with the 2.7T but you need to be diligent about asking what options are on the car. With the 2.8 and 3.0 you will to be check to sure the car is nicely optioned. The best options to look for are Premium pkg, Celebration pkg, Sport pkg, Cold weather pkg, Guidance pkg and sunroof. Each MY has a somehwat different package makeup so again, look at the model guide for details.

Model Guide

Default this is all very helpful. Last ?ion... '00 A6 4.2L w/86,000miles for $15,500 has new brakes/rotors/

and tires. The owner has changed most all control arms and tire rods. What do you say? Spend a little more and get one with only 50,000miles or get this one? Does high milage bother anyone here?

Thanks,

Jason
