Tip trannies and 2.7T engine chipping

Tip trannies and 2.7T engine chipping
If the S4/A6 2.7T Tip trannies are rated at 310 lb-ft max, how are so many of us running them with well over that from chipping, safely?
I am trying to determine what to do now that I'm going to fix my tranny, after it got destroyed. Was just driving down the highway, and it happened.
Seems like it probably was just a transfer case or clutch pack failure...apparently this is a bit common with these trannies (had I known prior to my used A6 purchase...I would have never bought it, and waited to find a 6-spd). But we can't tell for sure. I never changed my ATF or filter, car's got 87K miles. Mechanic said the radiator/coolant situation was A-OK (if it hadn't been, the cooling of the ATF could have been compromised, leading to the tranny's demise, but this is not the case with mine).
Oh well. Anyway, thoughts are appreciated.

Its not as common as you think, i'm well over 310 hp and tq (whp). A guy from my
RM forum did lots of research, on the trannies. There is no max rating thats been proven. But generally most Stage III tips, have done the L10 torque converter upgrade, and some have done the valve body upgrade (street-tuned). Now I'm def. not saying that the trans. on this car are beefy, but quite a few people have blown their tranny (or related failures) stock. I'd say its more luck of the draw.
