Strange sound from steering

My '03 2.7T makes a funny whine from under the hood when the wheel is turned full lock to the left or right. It sounds like someone whistling through their teeth (that's the best I can describe it!), and it only happens when the wheel is turned all the way left or right. I've had it for quite awhile now, it just dawned on me that it probably should not be making that sound. A friend says he thinks it might be a belt rubbing. Anyone had a similar problem?

You should avoid holding the wheel at full lock. It accelerates the demise of the rack.

Make sure the serpentine belt is tight. You might consider flushing the fluid (easy job).

Same thing from my '01... Two dealers said it was "normal", I still don't quite believe them.

I'd be curious to know as well.

Almost all cars make some noise from the power steering pump at the stops.

DO NOT TOP OFF WITH STANDARD POWER STEERING FLUID

If you are low on PS fluid, make sure you use an approved fluid. Audi uses Pentosin, but you can find an alternative at a local Audi/VW shop or foreign auto parts store.
