Default Quick tire question.

I finally got my summer tires on (Falken ZE-512s on A4 sport 17s) and had an interesting discussion with the tire installer at Sears....

When I asked him what pressure he was putting into my new tires he said 30psi. I replied that I thought that was a little low, and pointed out the the manufacturer reccomended pressure with no extra cargo or passengers was 34/34 (front/rear). He poo-pooed that and went on to say his truck that weighs alot more then a sedan only runs 30 psi. As soon as I drove away I could feel that 30 psi just didnt feel right, and promptly filled up to 34/34 and things feel alot better. In the past I've run 36/38.

What do you guys think/use?

If anything, manufacturer's spec are on the low side to make sure you get a comfy ride.

Default Sears...I think that is all that can be said to explain his ineptitude...

I would never take my car to Sears for tire mounting...there are enough specialty shops with good equipment and they are used to high performance wheels/tires.

So do I. If he's so smart why does he work at Sears mounting tires?

Default Imbecile.

Its a matter of tire size and load rating, then tire pressure.

of course that high school dropout knows more than Audi's engineering team. Except of course when it comes to designing ignition switches, in which case maybe he does.

For 215/55-16s (93lr)I would use 37-38 lbs.
For heavier load ratings (e.g. 95-96) I would use 36-37 lbs
For 255/40-17s I use 38 lbs
