According to this arcticle below, the bigger the spread, the more polymers have been added to the oil, and that's not good for the engine. However, how serious that really is - I have no idea, but apparently not as serious in case of synthetics. I'm sure it's less serious than not having enough top-end protection by running a w30 type oil.
