What is meant by riding the clutch. Newbie manual driver.
Also what is the proper way to reverse? It goes to fast. I clutch down then gear in then release the clutch partially. If speed picks up too fast i clutch down again. I dont use brakes since it stalls. Should I be releasing the clutch all the way and using the brakes and going into nuetral before it stalls?...just more difficult this way.
Btw, only been driving for a couple days.
Keep practicing.
Riding the clutch refers to rest your foot on the clutch pedal, or more specifically having the clutch partially depressed during normal driving. The friction plate on the clutch is a wear part, use it sparingly.

FYI: Even you just press lightly without even going as far as moving the clutch plate (your just taking up slack in the linkage), you're still wearing other items in your transmission (bearings and such).
As someone once said, "Treat your clutch as if the peddle was RED HOT... be on it as little as possible". I have no idea who said it, but think it was someone in the racing world.
Obvously, when your reversing your car, it can't be treated that way. But you get the idea...
