Default New '04 A6 owner - Extended warranty question.

First off, hello. - I purchased a 2.7t the other day - and I'm in love with it. It still has 6/months on the factory warranty, but was curious what you all went with for extended warranties - it wasn't a dealer purchase, so the warranty I ended up with was not the certified pre-owned, but a third party.

All I can find about them is scaring me a bit. First Automotive Service Corporation is the name - any one have any experience with them? I have a window to get out of the purchase if I'd like and want to do the proper research prior to being locked in. I went with the max/exclusionary coverage.

Thanks. Expect more questions in the future!

I'm self-insured. That way there are no questions about what is covered.

I've read that a number of times here and searching other forums - I also have an 04 Touareg and frankly can't imagine owning that without an extended warranty - there's been at least 10k worth of work done on the factory warranty, and while I love them, German cars aren't cheap to fix when they break.

I am one of those who would rather lay out some money for "insurance" and sleep easy.

Thanks for the input though.

Default Insurance companies -- on average - make money

If they expect to pay $10 over the next N years, they will charge you $12k. If they charge you $3k, they will ose money -- and maybe go out of business, paying nothing.

Its pooled risk, adn the poller takes a commission. Its that simple.

To win, you have to ask yourself, "what do I knwo that their actuaries dont". If the answer is significant and believable, you can win. is it? You can also "win" by trading off a small% likelihood of a huge payment -- which you might not be able to swing (only you can say) - for a moderate payment that you will 100% pay.

Default Pretty comparable on what I paid, but

they at least look on the surface to be backed by a real insurance company. I'm worried about the fly by night companies that go bankrupt, I lose my money, and the "insurance" that lets me sleep relatively peacefully.

Loving the car btw, first time in about 14 years I'm making excuses to drive somewhere... Honey, we're out of milk I'll be right back!

Default If I owned an 04 Toureq, I would not be self insured. ...which is why I don't own one.

Damn scary.

:-) I totally understand. Still though, I love that vehicle. It has great pickup, an amazing amount of luxury for a VW and personally looks great. I haven't had an ounce of trouble that caused me any personal pain, always have been given free loaners, relatively quick service times*, etc. This is not the norm from what you'll see on the vortex boards and elsewhere though.

*they had to ship 2 fuel pumps from Slovakia or something, that took a week, other than that though - pain free.

Thanks.
