Default Brake Vibration

When I took out the A6 on the freeway the other day, I touched the brakes the streering wheel tended to vibrate. It happened all day at highway speeds. It doesn't seem to do it on the streets but my wife drives the car most of the time so I'm not totally sure. She said she noticed it but didn't give it much thought?!! Could it be the dreaded warped rotors I read about here? Any ideas before I take it in?

Your guess (warped rotor(s)) is probably the reason.

Concur. Wife driving = light braking = brake deposits.

Default How hard do you have to "panic stop" to get them off. Are the deposits visible?

I'm familiar with this problem and cure, but want a bit more advice. I have some brake deposit issues on my S6. Unfortunately, its hard to figure out when its "cured" sine I have a couple related issues (tire in need of balance, possible loose control arm somewhere, not yet sure).

Can you visibly see when its "clean"? How?

Exactly how hard must I abuse them on the highway to get rid of them. I did a couple very firm 70->40 slow downs yesterday - sugnificantly better, btu not perfect.

Thanks,

Grant

Default To get them totally clean, the pads will be smoking and there will be a dull grey color on the rotor

BUT the important thing is to let the pads and rotors fully cool before coming to a full stop and holding the pads on the rotors. Usually 6 - 8 HARD stops from 70-10 mph in sucession is enough, but like I said the pads will be smoking and it will smell awful.

There are some deposits that are not able to be removed from the rotors - this is why one should NEVER sand the rotors with aluminum oxide sandpaper; this causes cementite to be formed (a different chemical that actually forms in the matrix of the rotor itself) and this is something that gradually gets worse and the only cure is new rotors.

Default Drive about a 1/2 mile between the hard stops then drive for at least 15 min w/o using the brakes

to let them cool. You need to find a place with no traffic and no stop lights. Expressway in the middle of the night is a good bet.

Default Warped rotors are very rare. Uneven brake pad deposits usually cause the vibration

commonly ID'd as warped rotors.

Default Excellent points. With a MT, its hard to do; with a tip it would be damn near impossible unless you

just drive on the interstate with no traffic.
