I bet this is a n00b question, how much play should the front drive axle have?

I bet this is a n00b question, how much play should the front drive axle have?

I just got the lower control arms out, and the drive axle seems to be moving quite a bit... I STFA, and looked around in my Bentley. Didnt find anything.

In & out of the trans? Seems like an inch or so was what I saw when I changed

my outer CV joint(s). Rotationally, i think you can spin it freely, assuming your not in gear.

agreed, same experience here when I did my CV boots. The axle has a splined end that

engages in the inner CV joint (just like at the outer CV) so that allows for the "horizontal" (in/out) play. The rotation, as Flint says, is normal/necessary.
