The 4.2 v. 2.7t post made me think about turbo life. When was the last time...
Every time someone mentions 2.7 reliability, there are a responses about turbo fragility. However, it is extremely rare that anyone posts about the loss of a turbo. This leads me to the conclusion that the 2.7 in the C5 body is generally pretty reliable and that a turbo that sees regular oil changes can expect to live a long life. This is especially true of stock, unchipped cars running synthetic oil.
What say you, C5 forum? Anyone lost a turbo lately?
I design and build turbo kits for older BMWs and have owned a couple of old Saab Turbos (tweaked of course). I put 250K miles on the original turbo on my Saab SPG and there are currently 45K miles on my '86 BMW 635 twin turbo. I use Mobil 1 oil with 10K mile change intervals (filters every 5K ) and have never had a turbo failure.
Certainly I can remember a few lower mileage ones going and a few chipped ones going. But I can't remember the last time someone who fit the above description posting on a blown turbo.

Having said that, it is generally agreed that the stock K03 turbos have rather small oil galleries and small turbine shafts that can exacerbate problems resulting from neglect.
