Default 2003 S6 transmission issue- the car is revving up to around 3-4k rpms and then finding a gear (3rd?)

before slingshotting forward. First gear seems ok, second gear seems like it is missed and then the car revs w/o torque (as if I'm depressing the clutch) and then launches as it finds 3rd. This happens every 3 or 4 accelerations from stop and started last night. Comments?

An experienced trans guy guessed it might be a low fluid issue. It has never been changed or filled and I have 70k miles now.

I've had other guesses include torque converter and a bad clutch finger mechanism. I would love if it was just a fluid issue. Dealer is looking at it on Tues but in the meantime it sits in my garage.

Default Re: ASAP see an indie ZF certified transmission repair shop And

get ready for a rebuild bill ($4k +). Fluid low? You can't be that lucky.

Default Yeah, I'm lining that up.

Dealer first.

I'm not that lucky.

Default To be honest, it may have been done at 55k. I don't recall.

It isn't exactly something that was advocated inside of 50k.

Default I would try a fluid and filter change first and see what it does

Unless you REALLY trust the trans shop you take it to I would not go to them and ask them to diagnose the problem. The easy answer for them it that the trans is toast and will cost several thousand to fix. They make a boat load on the repairs and a full rebuild or replacement is sure to fix the problem, even if it's something as simple as low fluid level or a sticking valve that could be solved by fresh fluid at the proper level.

A fluid and filter change should is about $150 in parts + labor and mark up.

Default i just had mine done on my '03 S6...

posted down below on this too...

torque converter was bad. Definalty find a reputible place. i didnt take it to a dealer, but an import trans shop that does mostly bently's (they get all the business at one of the bently shop here in chicago).

i am under EZ-Care ext warranty, so i lucked out, but the bill wasn't that crazy anyway. if i remember, it was upper 2K.

either way, it sucks. why would they spec the trans so close to the car's ability. dumb! the best thing is that the trans shop said that it will most likely never happen again as they will be rebuilding by hand rather than machine. extra care put in, and more exating tolerances. it will be stronger than original.

good luck!

Default The 87 is my roll number. I graduated in 98 BSME

Xi Beta chapter, Lawrence Tech, Southfield, MI. You're the second Theta Tau I've run into on AW. The other was from Colorado School of Mines. I don't recall his screen name. IIRC he was on AWOT when he saw my screen name.
