Offset is measured only relative to wheel width. What width are you running?

My present wheels are 8.5" and the tires are 225x35x18

I'll give you the factory specs...

16x7" ET45 offset for either wheel ofered on the 2000 2.7T (the twin 6-spoke wheels that came with a sport package or the stock 5-spoke wheels). In 2001 (later in the model year) the sport package wheel was changed to the BBS-style which was 17x7.5" ET43 offset.

Again, offset alone does not determine if a wheel will fit. The shape of the spoke contributes to fitment as well.

With that width an offset of 35 is a good fit.

However as Boston driver noted above, on the 2.7T you have bigger than average calipers, so offset alone won't determine if the wheels will fit.

There's no absolutely required offset measurement for everyone. ET35 is just a rough estimate of what will fit on the A6 2.7T. You can probably go as low as ET30, or as high as around ET40 (depending on the clearance of the brake caliper).
