Default Thinking of getting a used '00 or '01 A6 2.7T, things to watch out for?

Hi Guys, I'm no strangers to Audi's as I've had a B5 1.8t A4, B6 1.8t A4, and a B7 2.0t quattro. I regretted getting rid of the B5 and was thinking of getting another B5, but I see there's good deals on used '00 or '01 A6 2.7tq. I have a few questions.

1) What are the reliability/maint issues (the cars I see are normally high 70k miles to 90k miles). Besides timing belt, waterpump, and fluids change, any other know issues? auto tranny? turbos?

2) I am going to do very minimal mods; chip, stiffer susp, maybe exhaust. What kind of performance (handling+speed) can I expect compare to a K04'ed A4 1.8t with similar mods?

3) Is the A6 a good car to self-service (Ross-Tech VAGCOM friendly?) Is 150k miles realistic with regular maint?

TIA

Default If you've had an A4, you know the drill.

Good support here, most issues well documented, etc.

With the 2.7, go as late as possible. I'd go late 2001 and up.

Default The frequency of engine oil leaks will alarm you after the 1.8t whihc is ....

usually fairly 'dry'.

In terms of performance and handling. you can never make an A6 handle like an A4. It is heavier and simple laws of physics pertain, but it a far more refined car with many bits and pieces the A4 does not have.

As 4Driver4 has said. go fo as late car as you can afford but with the 2.7, there were a few important engine mods post 00, larger turbo oil feed lines and drain is one which is probably the most important due to it increasing turbo reliability.

Compared to an A4, engine out for both turbo's to be changed and there is lost less room to work even thoigh it is a bigger engine bay. Fuel economy, something which has finally hit you fols in the US, the A6 is going to be about 15 to 20% worse for the average driver, again, physical mass tales it's toll.

Having said all that, I prefer the A6 to almost any A4. I think the A4's seem to turn in a little too agressively and seem to almost be tripping over when driving quickly, the A6 understeer is not too bad but allows a smoother driving style at higher speeds.
