"Poor Mans" pressure test.....?
Do you need a compressor? Or can you used a bike pump with gauge? Is the constant flow of air make it easier to find the leak or is it a must?
I found a tire inflater with auto cutoff at a set psi. I was thinking of making a AWE tester with a inner tube nipple...waste of time or ok idea? I have no use for a compressor(besides this),but I guess I could probably just rent a compressor for an hour. If my idea worked, I would always have it on the ready.

I may be misunderstanding your question...
As far as having "no use" for a compressor, I once ruined a $250 Pirelli with a slow leak because I drove half a mile to a service station to fill it. It wasn't flat, it was just low enough to crush the sidewall by the time I filled it. Bad decision.
I now keep a $30 tire inflator in each car. It's also useful for rafts, footballs, bike tires<ul><li><a href="http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_02875115000P?vName=Automotive&ke yword=compressor">Compressor</a></li></ul>

The problem with a hand (or other low flow) pump is that the air you pump into the engine will...
...constantly be leaking out via the exhaust valves and pistons. You'd have a very tough time pumping fast enough to accumulate a few psi while trying to look/listen for leaks.
