CV Boot Shaft Cracked... Ripoff?
Obviously, for $119 lifetime alignment they couldn't just finish the job there, and found several problems with my car. Some of them (i.e. brakes) were completely unfounded, and I called them out on several of them, with a friend of mine who specializes in brakes. One of them though, a cracked CV Boot, I think holds some merit. I've been noticing a lot more of what I thought at first was brake dust on one of my wheels, but is more likely grease...
Anyway, Firestone quoted me $612.50 for the part and $123 for labor. While the labor quote seems reasonable, $612.50 for a freaking CV boot seems outrageous! I talked with a friend of mine who is good with cars who said the CV boot shouldn't cost me more than $50 at most, and when I went online and looked at the part, it was like $30. Am I missing something here, or is Firestone trying to steal my wallet?
Also, my friend said they make some of these airtight boots that "split" open, go around the piece and then clamp shut on both sides, so that installation is super easy (i.e. no dissasembling, replacing them reassembling), but wasn't sure if they are compatible or made for Audis or if they were really that worth it in the long run....
Thanks!
Now... talking to one of the dudes in my office, he says that maybe I should have the whole axle replaced, and just not the boot... Said he's replaced his boot before and it's cracked shortly after and that replacing hte axle might be the best bet...
What do you guys think? The boot's probably been cracked a few weeks, and I think it's not that large of a crack, because I haven't noticed too too much....
