Default C5 A6 under consideration for performance and maint. concerns (4.2 v 2.7t)

I can't find much info on 4.2 v 2.7t comparison (I found a post referencing it but couldn't find the original). But I'm considering a 2001 4.2 or 2.7t. I plan to do chip, tip-chip (if 4.2 or 2.7t auto), and intake/exhaust at most (maybe minor susp mods like stiffer springs and sway bars). I've been looking at perf numbers and 2.7t with chip, exhaust+intake should yield 14sec or less 1/4mi and I assume the sports pkg or minor susp mods would help (and the steering mod). I'm worried that an 80k miles 2.7t may have maint. issues sooner than I would like but I'm affraid 4.2 may be too limiting and the weight concern. I havent looked too much into 4.2 v8 but how is the performance with minor mods like chip (i know it doesnt yield much with N/A), tip-chip, and intake/exhaust? Are there any CAM upgrade avail? any info? TIA for your feedback

Default My instrumented tests done some time ago with chipped A6.

These runs were done with a certifed Vbox dgps unit. Sorry, don't have an 1/4 mile numbers. A 4.2 can't even come close to those numbers.

Previous post.
"I did a bunch of runs today to calibrate my Race Technology AP-22 against a calibrated and certified Racelogic Vbox (with DGPS). On the 8 runs, I did brake torqued launches and yielded 0-60 times in the 5.6-5.7 second range. The best I ever squeezed out of my Tip S4 was around 5.9 seconds with typical runs being about 6.02 seconds. (probably 50 measured runs on the S4 with the Vbox)

I knew I liked this car for more than it's comfort.

The AP-22, before calibration, said the car was .2-.3 slower than actual times.

Car has an APR v5.0 chip and I was running the 91 octane program with 93 fuel. Stock exhaust."<ul><li><a href="https://forums.audiworld.com/a6/msgs/581103.phtml">A6 tests</a></li></ul>

Default No cams that I know of for the 4.2, but there are other things...

Head porting (30-35hp,) VAST fan kit (5hp,) exhaust work (including DP's, 10-15hp) ECU chip (20hp,) etc. The main concern with the 2.7 is the turbos. If they fail, the engine must be pulled in order to replace them But if you want a car that's easy to upgrade, you should go with a 2.7.

Default There's a chip for 4.2 from GIAC, didnt know 4.2 had wider fenders, is there a list of diff...

is there a list of diff things between the 2.7t and 4.2 for the C5 chassis A6 that is not listed in the official model guide? Appreciate it.

After spending about $8k+ on my 99 1.8t, I don't think I want to spend more than about $2k on mods on the A6. I plan/hope to get some parts from classified and not have to pay retail....

Thanks again!

Default Full exhaust with DP+intake+ECU (and fan kit?) is probably all I'll do...any dyno or dragstrip #s?

Do you have the Tip chip or VAST tip programming done or know anyone who's done it? TIA

Default Unfortunately, not many people take their 4.2's to the strip.

As far as chips go, I don't have any.

Default Besides having wider fenders and a wider stance, the 4.2 is also 2 inches longer.

And because of the wider fenders, the 4.2 also has slightly different bumpers and sideskirts. All 4.2's have "facelift" style headlights and grilles, unlike the V6 models. IIRC, the 4.2 is about 400lbs heavier than the V6 models. The engine is completely aluminum, unlike the V6's which have an iron block. The 4.2 also has different gearing than the 2.7 (and S6 for that matter,) and is more of a cruiser than anything else.

Default if you want to mod it get a 2.7t....if you want the fender flares and linear power get the 4.2

my car is great on the highway and the track....the chip, cold air intake etc for the 4.2 is a waste of money, do exhaust, suspension and brakes instead
