2004 A6 Sline tires

I currently have Kumho Ultra High Performance 235/40/18 tires on my 18" rims. Will wider tires fit on those rims and if so, how wide can I go without rubbing the suspension parts or the wheel well?

Why do you feel the need to go wider? the 235/40/18 is perfect for the narrow body -

If you go with a wider tire, you will need to drop the profile so you won't affect the speedometer..

Also, what is your rim width? if it's 8", 235 is the correct size for it.

You wouldn't need to; your speedometer would just be off by a certain percentage...

...you have a 2% variance between new tires and worn tires anyway so it's not like it's exactly accurate all the time anyway.

245/40/18 is the widest you should go on an 8" wheel, and should fit fine.

Or that's what most tire manufacturers recommend as the minimum rim width for that size.
The overall diameter is slightly larger, but not very much.

You COULD try fitting 255/35/18 which might fit, but is slightly smaller diameter than stock.

Never minding of course that Audi puts 255/40-17's on 17x8's on the A6 4.2...

Width and aspect ratio need to be considered together when determining whether a wheel width works for a certain width tire. The higher the aspect ratio of the tire, the narrower the rim can be for any given tire width. I do agree that 255/35's should be on at least 8.5's though, but for 255/40's, I'll go with Audi's decision to do that on an 8.

But this is exactly my point, using a staring point of lets say the factory 235/45/17

and going lets say to a 255/40/18, the speedometer is going to be off by almost 3%.

If you drop the profile to a 35, then the speedo is only off by ~1%.

So it is a trade-off, larger width for an inaccurate speedo.
