Default Loud whine at higher RPMs.

I'm getting a very high pitched whine as I get into 5K-ish RPMs. The pitch increases as the RPMs do and cuts out after a shift (until I wind it back up). It feels like it starts as the second turbo kicks in. The noise is definately passenger side.

I've read over a couple posts describing a "dentist drill" sound. This is a pretty good description of it. However, I haven't found any posts describing it only in the high RPM range.

I made my 35 mile commute this morning driving very mildly and never heard the sound. The car runs fine. Even with the whine, it pulled just as normal.

Does this sound like a problem with the turbo (I thought getting an '02 would have saved me from that) or a DV / something else.

Very soft dentist drill (almost inaudible)- normal. Loud dentist drill = turbo lady.

Default Look in the back seat. Is your mother in law sitting there?

Removing my mother in law from the vehicle usually quiets the annoying sounds.

Could be the little fan in the climate control unit.

Default First of all, both turbos work together, they're not in stages, second...

if the noise is very loud (e.g. it covers your stereo at normal volume), you've got a problem. My car honestly sounds awesome when i get in the 4-6k rev range at WOT, even my gf loves that sound and she's not even into cars.
If there is something up with your turbos you'll notice it more when the oil is cold and also you would notice it when flooring the throttle in 6th gear at lower speeds. By doing that you're spooling the turbos up but the engine is not in the high rev range and you can hear the turbos better.

Default My money would be on a leak in the Throttle Body Boot. Can be invisible without...

...removing the clamps that attach the boot. Seems that the boot often rips under the clamp, then leaks, but only under high-boost circumstances.
