Default LIMP Mode, Stall, Car is not drivable!

Hey guys, my car is completely not drivable, I need some insight from you guys. I been searching since Friday and read up alot, and most of the other post said the problem is the MAF or secondary air sensor, but I changed the MAF sensor 1 year ago brand new from Audi Dealer!

For the past 2 weeks or so, I felt my car starting from red light is kinda lack of power, and responded slowly (slightly).
Today, after driving for 40 miles on highway, then drive in local with traffic, all of a sudden at the red light I see all the gears are light up, damn I know I am in LIMP mode, so I plug the Vag into my carputer right away and checked the code, and I got the following.
(The first one is from Transmission, second log is from the engine module)

Friday, 21 September 2007, 17:40:12

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

Control Module Part Number: 4B0 927 156 G

Component and/or Version: AG5 01V 2.8l5V USA 8509

Software Coding: 00010

Work Shop Code: WSC 02324

1 Fault Found:

18265 - Load Signal: Error Message from ECU

P1857 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

VAG-COM Version: Release 409.1-US

Control Module Part Number: 4D0 907 551 AH

Component and/or Version: 2.8L V6/5V MOTR AT D01

Software Coding: 06252

Work Shop Code: WSC 02324

6 Faults Found:

16711 - Knock Sensor 1 (G61): Signal too Low

P0327 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

16816 - Main Catalyst: Bank 2: Efficiency Below Threshold

P0432 - 35-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

17549 - Load Calculation Cross Check Range/Performance

P1141 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate

17535 - Long Term Fuel Trim mult.,Bank1 System too Rich

P1127 - 35-00 - -

17537 - Long Term Fuel Trim mult.,Bank2 System too Rich

P1129 - 35-00 - Please Register/Activate

16487 - Mass or Volume Air Flow Circ High Input

P0103 - 35-10 - Please Register/Activate - Intermittent

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then after I saved away the code, I clear the code and right away the car is out of LIMP mode even without shut down and restart the engine but the engine has SERIOUS problem and the shifting is extremely rough! for example, when at full stop, if I step on the gas hard or lightly, the RPM will drop to like 50RPM and fluctate or sometimes even stall, and if it doesn't stall, the engine will just keep shaking like the engine is dying and close to dying for like 10 sec before the car somehow starts moving and drives fine.
And if I shift gear from P to R or to D, it shift VERY rough!

I only drove the car for like 10 more miles to get home after I cleared the code, and since then I pull the code again, and I only get the codes from the engine side, not the transmission side anymore.

So what could it be? is my transmission completely dead? or is my engine has serious problem?
Thanks in advance for any insight!
Gilbert

Default It's gonna take a while before the transmission codes some back.

Sounds like a bad MAF to me. What kind of air filter are you running?

Default Need more info.

Looks like a 2.8. What year?
When were spark plugs last changed?
OEM air filter or K&N?
Ever change vacuum lines?
Ever change fuel filter?
Are you burning oil?

So far I would be looking on the engine side from the info. here, but need more to try to guess better.

Default More Information about my car.

Sorry guys, forgot to provide you guys with more info.
This is a 1998 A6 2.8L Quattro.
I changed timing belt, cam seal, water pump and the entire thing job about 20K miles ago.
Spark plugs are changed with the KGN (shoot forgot how to spell it) spark plugs. airfilter are changed with the regular autozone replacement airfilter. not K&N type. both spark and filter are changed 500-1000 miles ago.
And the MAF sensor is changed 1 year ago which has about 20K miles on it now.

Vacuum hose, I only changed like 2 or so lines when I am taking things apart to change the cam seal and rip 1 or two hose.

Is it possible for the MAF to die so quickly again? it's very very new.

Thanks again guys. currently I am driving my g/f's car, since my Audi is not drivable..
Gil
Thanks guys!

P.S., the car is not burning oil, it is leaking a small amount of coolant at the resovior T connection hose area, haven't fix that yet.

Try unpluging your maf(with car off), and see how the car runs.

Default Try:

A. Check whole intake for leaks:

1. Look at rubber boots between MAF and the intake manifold--first the clamps and the fitting of the boots to be sure they are on right, then for any vacuum leaks from there.

2. The usual check for vacuum leaks in general

B: I hate to say it, but if you changed the timing belt, are you really sure about the valve timing, that everything was torqued to spec., and that cam pulleys didn't slip?

C: Also, plugs all tight? No odd underhood noise in general? The codes you have don't seem to point to ignition except maybe the knock sensor, though you should look up the ones you don't have decoded, or register the VAG COM software or something to see what those are.

D: Yes, it could be MAF died again though unusual. As was already mentioned try unplugging it so it runs in open loop mode.

Default Updates on tranmission problem.

Hey everyone!
Today I am heading back to my place from my parent's house, which is a 55miles drive. before I leave, I decided to open the hood and take a look before I drive off with my g/f's car, so I open the hood, take off the engine cover, and I did a few things.

- Found out I replaced most of the vacuum hose when I was doing the timing belt 1 year ago or 20K miles ago.
- I unplugged the MAF Sensor and replug it.
- And I cleared the engine code.

And I drove it out for a test drive for like 3 mins, and it all seems well, and when I stop, I do a vag and no code. So I decided to drive it back to my apartment with my Audi (55 miles) got home savely and no problem. When I arrived, I pulled the code again and I get the following! The code seems alot better and these time, I have no transmission code either. only engine code:
Any help guys? (this is after 55 miles driving)

The 16816 is known to me, I just haven't replace the cat yet, but what is that 17549 still doing there? and can the 16711 have anything to do with it? since I have no more MAF code came up. can it be something else? my transmission is not shifting well since I bought the car 2 years ago, like from 2-3 or 3-4 shifting, during the shift, the RPM will shoot up a bit like in neutral before shifting into a next gear, and a some cases, a jerk will occurred. I am suspecting is one of the solenoid in the Valve body, or can this be related to the 17549 problem as well?

BTW, before I head home, I unplugged the MAF sensor completely and start the car, the Transmission jumps into LIMP mode right away, same as before, shift roughly when going from P to R, N to D, and so on. and RPM is not as stable.

Any idea guys?
Thanks all.
