Default Worn Front Tires

Wow, I just drove my Wife's 2004 A6 2.7T, 40K on Michelins, and it was terrible. It pulled to the left like crazy and sounded terrible. Took it to the tire shop and they scared me to death. The inside of both front tires were through the cords. What the heck caused the inside of the tires to wear that bad? Alignment? Tie rod ends? Or just bad tires? Michelins. Replaced tires with Bridgestones and all is well. Now has a slight pull to the right.

Default Sounds like alignment.

You didn't say which michelins, but I have found that Michelin overall makes the best quality tire on the market. Abnormal wear would only be the fault of the tire if it deformed badly, whcih I doubt it did.

Sounds like you either have too much negative camber or some loose suspension components.

Did you have the alignment checked and all the components checked for play?

Bear in mind, 40k is phenomenal on any even remotely performance oriented tire.

Alignment, either toe or camber.

Default Either alignment or worn parts (which let alignment stray). Not a normal circumstance

..for these cars. They wear the fronts fast, but quite evenly. Really hard driving wears the OUTSIDE, not the inside, generally.

Default Re: Worn Front Tires

If both front tires show inside wear, it is caused by too much negative camber.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Camber_angle

This could be fixed with a simple front end alignment, or could be caused by worn bushings, which will be more expensive.

Before you get new tires, take the car to a reputable alignment shop and have them diagnose the issue.

Dealer says it was just needing alignment. Get it back today.
