Need help figuring out my engine problem- no start condition....
I was driving today and I noticed a belt squealing sound. The coolant light came on and the temperature started to rise. Steam came out from the hood, so I figured the radiator was going. A moment later, there was a sound from under the hood and the engine dropped to 400 rpms, and I could not increase or decrease the rpms. I popped the hood and noticed the steam smelled like rubber as well as coolant. It was definitely coming from the driver's half of the front of the engine. I tried to start it, but the starter spins freely (and the engine does not turn over). The car is a 99 A6 Avant, QTip. The engine is AHA. Any ideas what went wrong? My first guess is timing belt, but I'm open to other suggestions.
