Current engine is AHA. Car is a 1999 A6, Qtip. I think the timing belt went, so I'm trying to figure out if I should replace the engine or rebuild it... I have heard that the AHA engine is pretty bad when the TB goes. I appreciate any options...

Default You THINK it went? Have you popped off the covers and checked yet?

What happened to make you think the belt failed? Belt failure is somewhat rare. It's usually the water pump or one of the rollers that goes..

I think it went as a result of a seized water pump... I was driving, heard a squealing sound (like a belt on a wet pulley), then a muffled sound like a belt breaking , then lots of steam that smelled like coolant mixed with burned rubber, then the engine locked its rpms at 400. the starter turns the crankshat, but not the cams. I can't look at it right now because I am trying to finish the clutch on my A4. I'm not real familiar with engine internals, so I'm asking the experts here if it's worth it to fix.

Default Put a new belt on, do a leak down test to find the damaged holes, pull heads, replace bad valves.

There is no need to replace the entire engine.

Default A rebuilt engine will run you ~$4,500 plus freight + cost to install...

total on one I know of recently (01 2.8) was $9,000~ installed.

To rebuild could possibly cost more, the price of the parts is unbelieveable... and you don't know what bearing/crank damage you may have without a total teardown which costs a lot of labor $$... Total cost of a rebuild on the engine I refer to above would've been even higher, 3 pistons had holes, valves were trashed, timing belt pulley bolt sheared, etc. (engine probably dropped a valve).

Overland Parts has rebuilt engines at times, better than what you'll get from Shokan or other salvage/used parts places.

Agreed though should also consider the alternative of selling the car for parts.
