Default Pass side front axle fixed, but noticed another issue.

After installing, I've got a crap load of play in the flange that the axle bolts to, as seen in the picture above. The play is at least 5 - 7 mm. Not sure what to do now. I checked the driver's side and it has virtually no play in it. Does anyone have any experience with this?

Default It's rotational. Just seems excessive. I can wiggle it up and down at least 0.5 in.

I've been driving it. It seems no better or worse than it was before I replaced the inner boot.

Shifting funny? Leaking fluid? Codes? Leave it alone.

Default There should be very little vertical play in the output flange. I do not know but I would ....

imagine it is a spline shaft going into a socket in the output from the diff. Assuming the diff bearings are OK, and you would know if they were that bad, then it has to be the splines are loose in the socket in the diff. This suggests there is a fair amount of wear and it has been loose for a long time.

If this is the case it will require removal of the diff and a new output shaft fitting.

I would remove the flange from the box and see what is wrong. It may be possible to pack it with some resin based compound then tighten it up and hope it holds!

Thanks Edd.

As you can see from the above picture, my flange does not have a center bolt, as some do.

I'm not sure how to remove it? Maybe I just pull? If so, maybe that's the problem and why there is so much play? Maybe I accidentally pulled it out (partially) when I was attaching/wrenching on the control arms and upright during the install.

the center bolt is right in the middle of the rusty area in your pic. Either torx or triple sqaure.

Default yep-even after my rebuild I still remember a little > the pros did the>

rebuild not me so I am assuming that some clockwise and counterclockwise play is acceptable ... I am not sure exactly how much though and I am not sure why it would exist other than just the nature of the design ...
i remember briefly having the same thought go thru my mind when I was reinstalling the trans ... but quickly dismissed it as normal with all that goes into a reinstall I didn't have much time to think about it... it works fine so I am not worried about it.

Now if you can pull out or push in on the flange (axial play) I would say there is something wrong ... or if there was some really excessive rotational play or associated unusual feel or sound associated with it .... you could possibly have a problem.

Default Rotational play is normal as there is always going to be some backlash in ......

in any series of gears and the diff itself but vertical or fore and aft movement should be very little if just percetable.
