Oil filter seal leak

Oil filter seal leak
I discovered a leak on my 2000 A6 4.2 ART where the oil filter meets the engine while doing an oil and filter change.
Anyone have any experience or ideas on how to fix this?
I was half tempted to throw duct tape over the seal, but that sounds stupid and the duct tape may catch fire if it gets hot enough down there.

I guess I could. When I get home, I'll try to see if I can light up the area well enough to get a clear picture.
To describe it further, I found oil deposits all over the exterior of the filter and on the top (inside) of the lower engine cover.

And I should also add, that the oil level consistently drops to below the minimum dipstick threshold in less than a month of minimal driving (it gets less than a 1,000 miles a month). And I'm using 5W-40 full synthetic (Castrol Syntec).

It happens - rarely - but you may have a bad filter - change it and make sure you have the right one
At worst you have to add a litre or so. The seal inside the filter -where it meets the oil pump - may not be seated properly.

Did the leak just start with the last oil change?
I have heard of the rubber ring from the previous filter staying on the engine, causing a leak. If I understand what you are describing correctly, this is probably the most likely culprit. Also, what kind of filter are you using?

May B dripping from above-Cam seal-also Bsure2 coat new oil filter>
gasket with thin film of fresh oil when installing .... I've known guys to have ripped or cut or pinched the gasket when tightening because they did not lubricate before inserting .......that's what she said ....ahaaha
