broken springs
I've been replacing my front end with a control arm kit that I bought from autoparts warehouse, so I'm doing both sides with upper and lower control arms, tie rod ends, linkages and sway bar bushings. On the driver's side I ran into a bad cv boot, so I'm replacing the axle. I then had a real problem with the upper control arm pinch bolt, forcing me to remove the spindle so a could take it to a machine shop and have the bolt pressed out (I'm only willing to go so far with a BFH and mapp gas). Anyhow, with the driver's side nearly completely disassembled I had a chance to really inspect the spring and noticed it was broken. I checked the passenger side and found the same problem - explaining the reason why all my control arms and bushings were screwed up.
So now I have the spring/strut assemblies removed from the car,and out of the bracket that holds them in place at the top of the wheel well. How do I proceed from here? Do I need a special tool to remove the spring from the strut? Should I replace the struts as well? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
The spring then needs to be compressed, and the top single 18mm nut can be removed safely.
Assembly is the reverse.
On a '99, Im betting the shocks are well past their useful life and probably should be replaced with the springs.
